A Message from our Founders 

Dear Housemates, 

A new year is the time that we reflect on what we can do better. Our philosophy is beautifully explained in Maya Angelou’s words, 

 ‘Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.’ 

When we founded House of Hackney in 2011, we wanted to create the brand that we wanted to work for- one that was led by heart and valued people and planet above profit. We had worked in companies where money was the most important metric and where mass production and subsequent exploitation was commonplace. As the seeds of our House were planted we had an opportunity to create a new model of business; one that was led by our values and championed slow sustainable growth and less invasive production methods. As we lived and breathed these values and embedded them into our culture, we started to see the potential of business to be a force for good. 

With Mother Nature as our design muse we have a duty of care towards her which we take very seriously. One of the reasons that we were drawn to interiors is that, by its nature, homeware is less throwaway; when beautifully designed and expertly crafted, it can be cherished for years to come. The world has enough ‘stuff ‘and we only want to create products that are made with a meaning and purpose. We are minimalists when it comes to this ethos. 

It was a proud moment 2 years ago when we received our B Corp status. Beyond high growth or business accolades, this was the most important recognition of what we stand for. 

Year on year we set ourselves higher targets as our level of awareness rises. We are learning on the job. Where we used to plant trees we learnt that protecting ancient woodland is even more important to our ecosystems. In 2022 with your help we are proud to have protected 170 acres of sacred woodland thanks to our partnership with the Woodland Trust. 

2022 is also the year that we achieved carbon neutral status. 

The most important part of our role as founders is to safeguard the brand’s foundations and ensure we evaluate how we continue to do better. This is a work in progress; as we become more aware, we need more innovative solutions. We are dedicated to this mission. 

We are excited by the future and the quest to find pioneering solutions where they don’t already exist. We believe in nature’s symbiosis and that everyone can do well together. We believe in knowledge sharing and collaboration at grass roots level. We believe that business can be a force for good.
